Artist statement:
My start was with thread. I make cards for loved ones with their names stitched on them. My first card was for my best friend, Kganya, who died of Leukemia. My thread now serves a new purpose, to stitch back together what was torn, to heal, to patch, to remember. the effort it takes to stitch a name, an object, a memory takes love an dedication. My work represents my loyalty and affection towards my friend, but goes deeper, penetrating to a spiritual, at some times conflicted, core.
I started with my best friend, now i have grown. i am interested in the idea that we are all connected in some way. Many studies suggest that we are related to everybody around us, but it goes deeper than that. We are all pieces of thread in a quilt, we all play an important part of keeping it together and the design of the quilt is diverse and beautiful. I want to display the connections we have, whether intimate, social or global; whether its personal or dedicated to the masses and whether it is our heart or our mind that makes the connection possible.

About Rachel:
HI! My name is Rachel and the picture you see on the left is me and my best friend in the world and beyond, Kganya. She died April 10, 2012 of Leukemia, but she's in heaven with God and I am here making sure no one forgets her. I am a board member/one of the founders of Kganya's Kause and we are a service organization partnered with Connor's Heroes; our mission is to help other kids who are still fighting in memory of Kganya. If you would like to find more information about this organization, go to http://www.kganyaskause.org/ for some info!
As for me, I love all types of art, music (I play the piano and sing), visual (my thread work), and even performance (even though i can't brag at all). I also love science, particularly biology and particularly oncology and the immune/nervous systems. I go to Deep Run High School and am currently a senior, I work at a local Italian restaurant and I'm a proud Whovian, Trekkie, HP fan, and a lot of other things you can find on Tumblr. I love God and I want to know him and the power of his resurrection (Phil 3:10).
